Big Board Rankings

Strengths

  • Has one of the strongest resumes of any player in this draft. First-team All-American who won the national championship and was named Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA tournament. Young for his junior class, not turning 21 until the end of August.

Areas to Improve

  • Not the most physically imposing guard around. Has average size and length to go along with a slight frame. Poor rebounder for his position. Probably best equipped to defend point guards but hasn't shown he can consistently run a team in the halfcourt. Decision-making leaves something to be desired at times.

Butler really impressed me in the NCAA tournament. His ability to get a shot off, and get to the spots he wants to get those shots off are really impressive. However, he has a pretty big issue. He’s too small to be real high scoring wing (unless he takes the Donovan route), and not nearly a good enough facilitator to be a real point guard. That limits his ceiling by a fair bit, but I’m confident that he has a role in the league.

Jared Butler is a 6-3 combo guard who can shoot the three, facilitate (although he''s not a true point guard), and defend on the perimeter. He can play on or off the ball and serve as a shot creator and three-point shooter. He should be NBA ready, but the fact that he now has a lower ceiling lowers his draft stock. Also makes terrific reads in the pick and roll, and I think he is underrated facilitating (part of the reason he had just under 5 assists per game is because he had another facilitating guard in Davion Mitchell).

Projected draft range: 18-25

6''3 with a 6''4 wingspan. Solid progression over the course of his three seasons at Baylor. The two things that stand out are his increased assists/40 this year at 7+ and his steals at 3+. Deep C&S range with great readiness to get off his shot. Outstanding footwork shooting and adaptable on bad passes. Quick release. Solid off the dribble. Will be a real threat shooting at the next level. Although wingspan is a concern, very nice floater and good angles to the cup. Uses spins on the attack to finish. Improving finisher at the hoop. Excellent defender overall, great lateral movement, constant pressure, active hands.

Jared Butler is a nice all around player. Fluid and smooth handle, great the point shot, solid length, and projects to be a pretty good defender.

Butler should be able to score at the NBA level but isn't really a point guard or a small forward which will limit his ceiling a little bit. Should have a role in the NBA as aa good scorer.

Draft range: 16-26

Positives

-A great shooter already (41% on 6 attempts, 78% from the line), has good balance and consistent, quick mechanics, great catch and shoot threat (over 50%!!!!) with pretty deep range, has upside off movement, solid relocation and positioning most evident around curls

-Has a tight handle, can get to his spots, simple fast crossover most effective, has upside as a shot creator, very good threat as an off the dribble shooter, kills teams that go under the screen, loves the pullback to create space

-Pretty poised as a scorer and passer in the PnR, has real potential to punish drop with jumpers and showed upside with the floater, puts the defender in jail well

-Underrated playmaker, makes some great reads in the PnR, really goot at hitting the roller in a variety of ways (pocket passes, wraparounds, especially lobs), can hit the open shooter, makes the right plays in transition, upside to be a real point guard in the league

-Really nice guard defender, strongly pressures on-ball with his agression, laterally quick and smart with his contests, thrives off-ball playing passing lanes, very smart with his closeouts and rotations, can be a solid team defense piece

Negatives

-Has struggles as a finisher, not the most explosive or physical athlete, doesn't try to get to the line much and settles for jumpers or floaters, despite this, he is a smart player and definitely showed craftiness on some drives and especially in transition

-Despite being a good shooter, he has a bit of a lower release, making it tougher to shoot over long defenders, missed a bunch of these shots way short

-Not a very versatile defender, neutral wingspan that probably stops him from guarding 3s and likely 2s, his impact on this end could be a bit lower

-Has some medical questions related to his heart, this would ultimately be the main cause for him dropping down to the late 20s or the early second round

Likely range: 15-35

Jared Butler is a very good player with a similar style to George Hill. Hopefully won’t be passed around as much as Hill but will still have a very good career.

An early POY candidate, Butler is the leader of a tough Baylor squad this year. He has good all around shooting and finishing, great hands on defense, and is a great decision maker on both ends of the floor. He does not scream upside, but Jared Butler is a great student of the game and his defense is pretty awesome already. I think he will be a cross between a Monte Morris/Jevon Carter type player. I see him kind of as both those guys molded into one player. Jared Butler not only helped win the NCAA tournament, he was named Most Outstanding player of the tournament too.

This is the point of the draft where If I were an NBA team I''d shift away from youth and upside and focus on players with some experience and a lot of positives. Jared Butler isn''t only a real NPOY candidate, he''s an undersized combo guard who I think projects as an excellent 5th best player on a team. Butler knows where to find his shots and has been a lights out shooter and lock down defender this season. In a league where everyone''s clamoring for 3 and D players. Butler is the kind of player who slides onto a contending team with non-guard superstars and can contribute in a significant way. Think of a harder nosed Mario Chalmers. Think of a more perimeter oriented Jalen Brunson. That''s a really valuable player. Butler isn''t the type of player who you build an offensive identity around, but he''s the kind of player who fills every crack. The one real downside with Butler- he''s 23- what you see with him is most likely what you''re getting. But for me? I see an NBA Starter.

Comp: Jalen Brunson
