Strengths

  • One of the most productive freshmen in the country -- averaged 20.2 points and 8.1 assists in just 33 minutes over the course of 12 games at Auburn. Plays with incredible confidence for a player his size. Gets to the free throw line more than most players with his frame -- 10.3 attempts per 40 minutes. Soft touch on floaters.

Areas to Improve

  • Doesn't have elite size of length for a starting PG, which limits his versatility on the defensive end of the floor. Has a slim margin for error defensively and doesn't always play with the intensity he needs to both on and off the ball. Needs to ramp up his defensive motor. Teams figure to pick on him defensively, especially in the playoffs. Lack of elite size will also force him to continue finding more ways to manipulate defenses with his eyes and create passing angles, especially because he can be a little relaxed with some of his decisions (5.0 turnovers per 40).

Probably lower on this dude than the consensus more so than any other prospect. He has an NBA skill, which is his playmaking. That keeps him on the big board. However, a non shooting, non defensive, not overly jumpy, 6 foot point guard (looks a LOT shorter) really just doesn’t often work in the NBA. He has potential to be a great lead guard, but more so than almost any one else on this board, has potential to be balling in Europe in two years.

If you are to take one thing away from this, recognize that Sharife Cooper is the best playmaking prospect in maybe a decade.

Sharife Cooper will be one of the top passers in the league one day. He has his weaknesses: his height, he can''t shoot, and will likely be ineffective in pick and rolls. But he still is a top guard since he can pass and makes all the flashy plays that get his tram pumped up. He can still score, averaging 20 points per game at Auburn and finding ways to drive and finish at the rim. Changes of speed are impressive and has some potential to become a spacer with his 83 percent free throw clip. The playmaking, the changes of speed, and shooting potential makes him really good.

Projected draft range: 20-30

5''10 with a 6''0 wingspan. Some of the most absurd per 40 numbers from the smallest player in the class - 24 ppg, 10 ast, 5 rbd, 5 TO, 10 FT ATTEMPTS. Incredibly gifted passer with outstanding vision, but his strength, size and huge USG leads to too many turnovers, needs to clean this up. Working on his step back three but at this point it looks to often like jacking, 23% from 3, but 83% FT shows promise at least a C&S. Great speed, handles and misdirection allows him to operate all over the floor as a playmaker. Absolutely insane at drawing fouls. On ball defense stays in front of his matchups with lateral quicks, but is going to get head hunted by every NBA team on PNR. Needs to get a runner floater. Shooting mechanics need to be refined, he falls back and it looks problematic for creating consistent makes.

Tier 6 Floor - low-end rotation player Bullseye - reliable back up PG Ceiling - low-end starting PG

Sharife Cooper led the NCAA in assists per game this year, and he can get buckets too. Cooper is extremely crafty and dynamic and I'd bet on him having a solid NBA career, but lacks the athleticism and burst needed to be an elite point guard without having an elite shot either.

He will be one of the solid PG''s in the draft. He can playmake very well for being only 5''11. I don''t know why it says he is 6''0 but he is 5''11.

Positives

-Arguably the best passer in the draft, dynamic, creative, flashy, can make basically any pass, unselfish in transition, makes the outlet pass, rewards shooters and throws lobs, an amazing pick and roll passer, plays at a solid pace and under control, routinely set up the roller for easy looks at the rim, hit corner shooters consistently

-Great at getting into the paint, very fast, elite handle, can blow past single coverage, split double teams, changes pace, hesitations, in n' outs, very deep bag of tricks

-Got to the line a lot after getting into the paint, had good touch on finishes at the rim and some really creative buckets

-Despite a lot of flaws, shot 82% from the line and 33% on catch and shoot 3s, potential to be a decent shooter

Negatives

-Has a lot of work to do on his jumper, leans far back and doesn't lift much off the ground, shot a bad percentage from 3 and teams will exploit this weakness, could be unplayable if this doesn't get better, showed better flashes in EYBL

-Despite getting into the paint a lot, wasn't a great finisher, needs to force it less at times and settle for a floater, especially because of his size

-Needs to master the floater and the short jumper, will be vital for a PnR-heavy short guard like Sharife is

-Will probably be a liability defensively, at 6 feet tall, players can usually just shoot over him, some issues navigating screens, will probably be matchup-hunted, does have quick hands and can be scrappy against guys similar to his size

Likely range: 15-25

In a short body of work he has been great. Sharife Cooper helps make Auburn even more competitive. The issue is he has not been on the court on a consistent basis for Auburn. Cooper made the SEC All Freshman team despite playing a little amount of games. He is a natural scoring perimeter guard on the next level. I am not exactly sure how his game will translate, as the SEC may be tough, it is just not the NBA. His size may hurt his draft stock a little combined with his small body of work. The upside might be tough to pass.

As I''ve been scouring through scouting reports and stuff, I been hearing a lot of stuff like "if Sharife Cooper was 5 inches taller he''d be the number one pick" I mean maybe that might be true but I don''t know if that''s any reason for him to be a top 10 pick. He''s way undersized, and as much of a skilled passer and an offensive force he is, his size makes his skill less significant- he''s not an amazing shooter, it''ll get harder and harder for him to score at the rim in the NBA. I''ve seen reports putting him between 5''10" and 6'' and I''d really lean closer to that 5''10". Sure he could become somewhere in-between an Isiah Thomas/Allen Iverson type, but the room for error there is so small and those players rarely justify their high usage with really efficient production- if they can- there windows for doing so are really small. Maybe Sharife Cooper could have one or two MVP caliber seasons- but I think that''s the most bullish prediction and I think you could spend too long handicapping yourself waiting for those years to come.

Comp: Isiah Thomas
