Big Board Rankings

Strengths

  • "Reliable playmaker in pick-and-roll and transition. Plays with control and discipline; he limits turnovers by making smart decisions."

  • "Improved shooter as a sophomore—he went from 26 percent to 36 percent on 3s. His soft touch from the line (77 percent) and on floaters offers more promise."

  • "Lockdown defender against guards with advanced technique fighting over screens."

  • "High-IQ team defender who rotates

  • communicates

  • and disrupts the opponent with timely rotations that put him in the passing lanes."

  • "Pass-first point guard with good instincts as a passer and decision-maker"

  • "Elite on-ball defensive player; menacing perimeter defensive presence"

  • "Improved as a shooter from freshman to sophomore season at Duke; still needs improvement but showed promising development and has good shooting touch"

Areas to Improve

  • "He knows how to conduct an offense at a high level

  • but he’s not an improviser who breaks down defenders off the dribble and generates magical passes."

  • "Mediocre finisher

  • as he lacks burst off the dribble and explosiveness as a leaper. He shot only 43 percent at the rim

  • per Synergy."

  • "Unproven shooter. Despite his progress

  • it came on a small sample; he’ll need to improve his abilities during (virtual?) pre-draft workouts."

  • "Move-the-ball distributor

  • but not a true creator: Doesn''t have the speed or explosiveness to blow by defenders and generate offense on his own"

  • "Shot just 26.2% from 3 as freshman at Duke; improved as a sophomore (36.1% from 3)

  • though that was on just 108 attempts. Has good shooting touch but needs to show it is sustainable."

Clamps down on defense. One of the best perimeter defenders in the draft. 26% to 36% from three, may have promise here which changes his worth. 15th in the nation in assists, 35th in assist/TO Won''t be impacting the game on the interior or with explosive playmaking. His ability to pull up for threes became an asset in year two and is the biggest determinant in his future value. Pedigree of Duke and an older brother already in the NBA makes him a sure fire draft pick but he seems like a strong candidate for a second round choice who could pleasantly surprise the right organization depending on the fit.

Smart player, maybe some teams that are searching for an NBA ready player can bet on him to have immediately a point guard for the bench
