Brooklyn decides they want to make a run at Mitchell and keep as many players as possible.
Cavs: Instead of seeking higher level players, Cavs opt to take back DFS, Simmons, Clonwney, and a bunch of picks. Then the Cavs can either let Simmons expire or flip him in a trade at the deadline for someone who wants to shed money. Simmons + LeVert is $55M in expiring money.
Nets: They are paying a lot in this trade, but the only rotation player they lose while adding Mitchell is DFS. Wade and Niang can be useful pieces as well. Jerome is to make money work.
Cavs After:
PG: Garland, CPJ
SG: Strus, LeVert, Merrill
SF: DFS, Okoro
PF: Mobley, Clowney
C: Allen, Simmons
They're still a really young team, so I almost prefer something like this that leave them flexibility to free up cap space next offseason or to go make a trade at the deadline (or both)
Nets After:
Not Sure how they'd play, but I'd imagine like this
PG: Mitchell, Schroeder
SG: Thomas, Jerome
SF: Bridges, Bates-Diop, Whitehead
PF: Johnson, Wade, Niang
C: Claxton, Sharpe
Feels like both teams make out well. Nets become a threat in the East, Cavs are still a playoff-caliber team, but don't commit themselves to additional money long-term until they see what their young guys look like without Mitchell and add some future flexibility to make trades.
