Offseason '24 if Mavs lose the play-in. Luka demands out. Mavs get biggest draft haul ever. SAS forms the top duo in NBA history

Edited from an earlier post to make the draft package even bigger. The Spurs already know Wemby is going to be an all-time great, but he needs an elite passer to set him up for success. These two with even a below average starting 5 around them are contenders for the next decade.

Dallas fans will hate this trade because they think it's an attack on Luka. It's not. Luka is in the MVP conversation for a reason, and he's top 3 minimum in the world (personally I put him 2nd behind only Jokic). BUT even with Luka playing at an all-time great level and having a borderline all star teammate, the team is not really contending. They don't have a lot of draft capital or other valuable assets to use for future additions. Kyrie is not getting any younger, and he's already slowing down a little bit (great when on the court, but he's missed a third of the season with injuries). I don't see this core contending for a title any time soon.

If the Mavs lose in the play-in this summer. Talking heads on ESPN are going to do their thing and overreact and blame it all on Luka. He might decide he's tired of this team wasting him for 6 years without building a winning core around him and demand out.

This draft haul includes a potential 1st overall pick in 2024, AND massively valuable picks from a declining Hawks team down the line. AND dozens of SRPs which are barely worth anything on their own, but can be combined to trade for a real piece, or a higher pick, or they can take the (very good) chance that at least one of the 20 guys they can take will be a surprise star like Jokic, Brunson, Draymond, Butler, etc.
