The Rise of the Phoenix Suns: How an organization went from the worst team in the league to a championship contender.

I’m sure we all know about the Phoenix Suns. They are currently sitting at the 2nd seed in the west, and they are closing in on the Utah Jazz for the best record in the league. Is it crazy to think that this team wasn’t even a playoff team last year, and for years before that was the worst team in the league? What caused this impressive turnaround? That’s what this post is about.

The best place to start would be the 2015 draft. The Suns selected Devin Booker with the 13th overall pick in the draft. That may have been the steal of the draft. Over the course of his career, Devin Booker has been an offensive machine, putting up a lot of points on good efficiency. He has been the Suns guy throughout the years, and now he is helping them compete for a championship. Devin Booker isn’t the only reason that the Suns are at the top right now though. For several more year’s, the Suns were always at the bottom of the league. Nothing was helping this team get better.

The next thing that would be good to talk about is the 2019 NBA draft. The Phoenix Suns had the first overall pick. They weren’t able to get a star player with that pick unfortunately, but the player they did draft has had an impact on this team. Deandre Ayton’s stats aren’t going to jump off the page, but he has been really good for the Suns. His presence in the paint is HUGE for the Suns. He grabs rebounds, gets blocks, and gets points all in the paint. Is skill beyond that area is limited, but this guy is surrounded by great perimeter players so he doesn’t have to worry about that. Ayton is quietly having a really big impact on the Suns, and is one of the reasons they are where they are.

Despite having Booker and Ayton’s, the Suns still were not good. They needed more in order to be a playoff team. That’s when the bubble came along and they went 8-0, almost making it into the playoffs. This was huge for the Suns. It gave their young players confidence and it was telling upcoming free agents that this team wasn’t far off from being a playoff team.

Fast forward to the off-season, and the Suns are looking to find the talent that they need to push their squad to the playoffs. There were a lot of interesting free agents that could’ve helped the Suns a lot, such as Fred VanVleet or Demar Derozan, but the one player that was the main target was Chris Paul. Chris Paul was on the Thunder, a team that was looking to start rebuilding. Chris Paul didn’t fit anymore with their timeline. So, the chase for Chris Paul began. There were a lot of team that were very interested in Chris Paul and were trying to make a deal for him. Nobody knew who would be able to make the deal. The Suns had to give up a lot, but they were able to trade for Chris Paul, a player that they KNEW would be a game changer for them. And oh boy, he was.

Before we move on, I would like to talk about the Suns front office. They did an amazing job at building a championship caliber roster. The supporting cast that they have given Booker, Ayton, and CP3 was put together well. They were able to make this roster out of nothing, and they deserve a lot of respect. Mikal Bridges, Cameron Johnson, Jae Crowder, Cameron Payne are just a few names of the fantastic supporting cast that this team has. I really admire how the Suns were able to put this roster together.

This season, the Suns have been amazing with their new big 3. Booker and Ayton have both taken a lot of steps in their progression, Chris Paul has been Chis Paul, and the supporting cast that the Front Office put together has been great. This is a team poised to make a run in the playoffs, and they for sure aren’t going to go away for a long time.

That is the story of how the Phoenix Suns built their championship caliber roster! Thank you for reading this! Did you enjoy it? Is there anything that you think should be added? Comment your thoughts down below, and be sure to like!
