Just looking at this guy, you think that there is no chance he does anything in the league. He won’t be mobile enough, he’ll be killed in pick and rolls, the game is moving away from the post. However, watching his film you see something that could be special. He is very surprisingly mobile for someone his size, and his best skill on offense may be his passing. The passes to the corners he will make out of the pick and roll will be something to behold. Of course there are flaws; his defense isn’t great yet, and his offense is somewhat raw. However, I expect this guy to continue to climb up my board.

Comparison: Jusuf Nurkic

Ceiling: Derrick Favors +++

Floor: Tony Bradley with a little bit more slickness

Day''ron Sharpe is a terrific shot blocker who might not be very mobile and isn''t the best in pick and roll defense but can rebound easily and has an underrated skill: passing IQ. His high assist percentage shows potential to be a passing point center who can rim protect and rebound. Hopefully Sharpe can lose some weight like fellow big man Luka Garza did because rim protecting doesn't mean you are a good defender, and he needs to be quicker and at least kind of switchable as most teams today switch everything.

Projected draft range: 30-45

Height 6'11 Weight 265 lbs Wingspan 7 foot DOB Nov 6, 2001 (19 years old) Pre-Draft Team North Carolina (Fr)

Offense

  • Doesn't have elite athleticism.

  • Post ups and seals don't appear to be maximizing his size.

  • He stands too upright, but at the college level he gets away with it.

  • Nice post fundamentals once he receives the entry pass, but working on the maturity to finish against elite talent athletes and size.

  • Looks to score in a variety of ways out of the post, this part of his game shows some upside.

  • Absorbs contact nicely.

  • Doesn't play above the rim.

  • Shot 51 FT%, not a jump shooter.

  • Has pretty good vision for a big and likes to find the open man in high-low.

  • 6.9 ORBD per 40 - Are you kidding me?

Defense

  • Outstanding rebounder, great at boxing.

  • Decent shot blocker and physicality.

  • Moves fairly well for a monster sized man, but just doesn't get low. It looks painful for him to get in proper stance. Needs yoga. Robotic motion.

  • Not sure he will be a better than average rim protector, but he knows how to stay vertical and utilize his mass.

Swing Factors

  • Rim Protection - If he can clean up his defensive stance, maximize his movement, and protect the rim in spurts there will probably always be a place for him in the NBA.

  • Free throw percentage - Won't even begin to assess an in clock jumper until this number starts creeping towards 70. If a shooting coach can fix this and he can starting hitting some jumpers it may unlock some of his passing potential. Otherwise what's the defense's incentive to not sag?

Role

  • A vacuum on the glass who finishes around the hoop on his massive offensive rebounding totals and is efficient with ball near the hoop.

  • LOW: Sharpe is a great rebounder who does little else at a competent level. He finds himself at the end of NBA benches for his size and rebounding prowess.

  • HIGH: A premiere rebounder in the league Sharpe also proves a competent rim protector who cleans up his defensive stance and does surprisingly well in space. He's a lob threat with some post skills and playmaking ability. Sharpe becomes a borderline starter.

Positives

-Really good rebounder on both ends, grabs the ball with two hands high above his head, he's physical and has good positioning, boxes out really well and gets around box-outs using spins on the offensive glass where he did a lot of his damage, very high motor guy

-Fluid feet movement, solid understanding of rotations, positioning and other defensive fundamentals, won't get roasted by guards

-High upside as a passer, made some really high-level passes to the dunker's spot and to shooters, potential to be good in the short-roll

Negatives

-Kind of limited defensively, not very explosive, not long for a 6'11 guy, his hips let him get blown by here and there despite solid feet fluidity, is an ok rim protector because of size but probably can't be an anchor

-Has real problems scoring the ball, not great around the rim, terrible on jumpers, 50% from the line, looks like a big lack of touch

-Had some lazy turnovers passing the ball out of bounds or getting ripped by double teams

Likely range: 25-40

Day''Ron Sharpe is a solid freshman. As a prospect, it is hard to get a great read off of him yet. He has the physical tools to give him good upside with good play. The issue with this guy is that he hasn''t dominated in the playing time he has had. His numbers should be far better for a second unit player and this is a solid draft, even for big men. His HS accomplishments shouldn''t be ignored. He has made some strides as of late, but just isn''t consistent.

High motor, big body- does the little things. Day''Ron isn''t the athlete or rim-runner Isiah Jackson is- he''s basically the inverse- but teams in search of a strong-bodied rebounder couldn''t look further. He doesn''t get tons of tick for UNC but like Jackson, his per-36 projections show an NBA caliber big.

Interior big man who plays his butt off and has upside on the defensive end.

PLUSES

Potential as a passer since he makes quick decisions with the ball within the flow of the offense.

He sets strong screens and finishes well at the rim, which could make him an effective pick-and-roll option.

Hungry offensive rebounder with a nose for tracking the ball. He has a quick second jump to go back up and score. Also a great defensive rebounder who consistently boxes out.

Makes hustle plays and is an aware off-ball defender who jumps passing lanes and makes proper rotations.

Solid rim protector who’s active in the paint. With a strong torso, he’s built to battle against true post bigs.

Despite his size, his best defensive attribute is his agility. He displays the potential to switch screens, which would raise his ceiling on defense.

MINUSES

Lacks a reliable perimeter jumper and doesn’t shoot well from the free throw line.

Loose handle diminishes his ability to be a shot creator out of handoff and post actions.

Defensive fundamentals must improve to maximize his raw ability, particularly with his stance when moving laterally on the perimeter.

Player Comp= Richaun Holmes,

Pick 22 Los Angeles Lakers:

Sharpe reminds me of a young Kendrick Perkins or a little bit of Derrick Favors. He is a big, strong center who can rebound, score inside, and protect the rim. His ceiling is low because he lacks floor-spacing ability. I see him as a decent backup center that can play a role in the first 3 quarters but struggle at the line too much to be a 25-30 minute player.
